Over a decade after the last installment in the franchise, fans are still looking for a Shrek 5 to bring them back to Far, Far Away in 2001. The animated movie landscape changed forever when Shrek premiered. A clever blend of adult comedy and kid-friendly whimsy, it put a twist on the fairy tale formula with outrageous, rope-breaking characters, a catchy soundtrack, and a sweet message of self-discovery. It was quickly followed by Shrek 2 in 2002, Shrek the Third in 2007, and Shrek Forever after 2010.
Despite its slow development, Shrek 5 is still happening — and despite changes in direction and story, it looks like it’s finally emerging from its still-scary development hell. The success of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish has reignited interest in the Shrek franchise with the acclaimed spinoff film teasing more adventures in the land of Far, Far Away. After such a long wait, Shrek 5 could prove to be the most exciting installment in the franchise that helped put DreamWorks on the map as a CGI animation powerhouse.
