In a recent interview, Hideo Kojima said that he had several arguments with Konami management because of his insistence on developing the story aspect of his games and focusing on it greatly. Management would respond with statements like: Games don't need a story, or why are you so interested in something sideways? Kojima says that the era in which these problems occurred between him and management was characterized by weak storylines in games and a lack of character development or mature dialogue.
Kojima and his team wanted to change this, so they insisted on providing a deep story and dialogue that would live on long after the game was released. This is where the idea of Metal Gear Solid came from, which was one of the best story-driven games. Kojima says that he read 300 books and would go to the library every day to read about the time period in which the game takes place, and how to write the script and dialogue.
